St. Lucia is positioned in the middle of the
Windward Islands. It has excellent beaches, good-natured locals and wonderful
scenery all designed to make an ideal holiday destination. Castries
is one of the prettiest and more developed Caribbean capitals, burrowed in a harbour
against a backdrop of verdant hills. Derek Walcott Square and the nearby Cathedral
of the Immaculate Conception sit in the town centre.
Rodney Bay is the tourist focal point. There
is an idylic mariner within the harbour, leading to the fishing village of Gros
Islet to its north. This zone is graced with fishing shacks and lcoal bars all the
way to Pigeon Island.
Nearby, Reduit beach, is full
of resorts offering a range of water activities. Several other resorts benefit from
secluded beaches along the coast between Rodney Bay and Castries.
Soufrière is a peculiar little town in the
southern region of St. Lucia. It is famous for the pitons - large peaks that
rise straight out of the water. If you're so inclined you can climb them
depending on how energetic you are, but both peaks are beautiful and are ideal photography
fodder. A number of sulphur springs are also located here, where you can bathe
and benefit from the minerals located in the water.
If you are a diver and or snorkeler you
might want to head for Anse Chastenet, one of the Caribbeans best underwater
spots. The water is beautifully transparent and is teeming with vibrant tropical
fish.
Marigot Bay is gracefully nestled along the
coast. It is a remote bay lined with palms and has a secluded resort and beach.
This is an excellent location for swimming.
Hewanorra International Airport, in the south
west of the island, receives daily flights from the America and England. Vigie aiport is
near Castries and provides regional flights all over the Caribbean. Taxis are frequent and
easily available. A ferry runs to Martinique on a daily basis .
